Notes for John Cockey Gist
"John C. Gist came to Kansas with his father George Washington Gist; helped him stake out a claim, in what is now the heart of Leavenworth, Kansas. Later he made a successful overland trip to California. He panned enough gold from the bed of the Sacramento River to give him a good start in life. When he returned he bought a farm of 350 acres in High Prairie Township, where he was a successful farmer and businessman. He served as county commissioner for many years"
